Daydream your way to learning a language?

Sounds too easy, right? I mean, who ever heard of daydreaming leading to anything productive? After all, if you were caught daydreaming in class you got yelled at by the teacher.  And if your parents caught you daydreaming while doing your homework…you got yelled at again!

Well, believe it or not, daydreaming is a critical part of your success as a language learner. You heard that right. You must include daydreaming in your daily routine in order to guarantee you’ll learn faster and easier than ever.

Have I lost my mind? No. You see, I don’t want you to daydream about anything. I want you to daydream about your life as a fluent speaker. Either in Spanish, chinese, german, japanese, you name it.

You need to be able to see yourself enjoying success in order to continue with your studies. Let’s face it, learning a language is a long and, at times, difficult mission. There are many people that begin but only a few that make it to the end.  I know from my experiences learning Spanish at age 22 that there are a lot of other things you could be doing with your time.

Well,  in order to keep your motivation high, you need to take at least 5 minutes out of your day (either everyday or from time to time) and see yourself speaking and understanding like a real native. Just close your eyes, picture the place you’ll be and the people you’ll be with, and the fun you’ll be having.

Get as crazy and outlandish as you like. Just remember to make it your “dream come true” moment. No more studying to do, no more verbs to conjugate. You have it all and you’re having the time of your life. You speak to anyone you want, you engage in interesting conversations, and you feel like you’re on top of the world.

Once you get into habit, you’ll begin to see that studying is a little less painful. In fact, you begin to look for ways to study more. After all, you now have a clear idea of the life that awaits you. And it kicks butt!

So, your homework assignment today (and many days after) is to daydream. Naturally, you’ll need to keep up the studying but include daydreaming. Learning a language will never be easier.
