Learn Spanish vs. Learn Chinese
This question is more for students in school than adults. For adults, learning Spanish or learning Chinese will depend on need or pleasure. For students, there are many more things to consider.
For example, which offers the best opportunity for a job after school. In most cases your first degree (International Business, etc..) will get you in the door but a language will help seal the deal once you’re there. Speaking Spanish helps with any company doing business in major US cities and in the Americas. Speaking Chinese will help in very few US cities however the Chinese market is massive. Any company doing business in China will give their right arm for someone who can speak fluent English and Spanish.
Learning Spanish is easier. You’ll learn quicker and get more exposure once you do. Learning Chinese is more difficult and you’ll have to work hard to get more contact with the language outside of the classroom.
Nevertheless, with the internet, learning any language is easier than it used to be. You can find websites that offer podcasts and audio/video connections. You can also get access to Spanish and Chinese radio and TV stations.
In the end, it’s up to your individual tastes. Remember, learning a language requires a lot of time so make the decision based on what you would like to learn and then the work won’t seem so overbearing. In most cases, you’ll find the job that’s right for you if you follow what your heart says to do.
